This business of one party going alone is one reason why the NRM will be here to stay. Some of us were disappointed from the word go when we saw Kiiza Besigye to be joint president for the Opposition. The sensible thing to do as of now is to start early and have workable strategies so that when polling time comes, though the opposition will not have much money, but will be better organized to see that at each polling station they are represented. With the nature of our population, each party fielding a Presidential candidate will get us to square one. This is an early warning to the likes of Mao. Secondly, it is important to know the mood of the population. People are fed up of going to polls which cannot change the President. So, to have them turn up in 2016 will require a well thought strategy for candidates who fool themselves imagining that things that have worked in US will necessarily work in Uganda.

MAO GETTING DP SET FOR 2016 ELECTIONS

DEMOCRATIC Party (DP) president Norbert Mao has said he will focus on rebuilding and strengthening Uganda’s oldest party so that it wins the 2016 presidential elections.
Mao, one of the seven former presidential aspirants who lost to the incumbent President Yoweri Museveni in the February 18 polls, said setting up party structures at the grass roots across the country was high on his agenda for the next five years.
“We held big rallies during the presidential campaigns in major towns but there was no one to follow up after we had left because we don’t have grass roots structures,” he said.
He told journalists last week that DP would regain its former strength and glory under his tenure as its president.
“I am going to spend much of my time building the party. It’s going to become stronger each day. I have not yet made up my mind to contest as president in 2016,” he said.
