SCRAPPING GOVERNMENT SPONSORSHIP IN PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES IS THE ONLY VIABLE STRATEGY IN COUNTERING EXAMINATION (UNEB) MALPRACTICES

A few days ago, as I had some conversation with some lady who was a stranger, it so happened that we ended up focusing on performance by schools in examinations. The lady told me of some experience where a supervisor who had been posted to be in charge of exams was surprised that the school did not have arrangements to cheat exams! I learnt that such devilish supervisors organize with school authorities that some children are helped in their final examinations; which practice ensures the school of some quota of 1st grades!
The challenge at hand is that cheating/stealing examinations is real and MUST be fought. When you look at what the cheats, thieves are after, it boils up to finally being able to successfully get Government sponsorship in public Universities. It is equally true that majority of the Government sponsored students in public Universities in Uganda are from well to do families that have managed to take such students to the good schools where fees is high.
The way to go is to withdraw sponsoring the best performing students such that the money from Government is used in better pay to lecturers as well as other critical areas where some of the funds from private students are put. The move would also lead to lower tuition fees as the burden would be shared by all admitted as compared to the situation as of now.
